Model United Nations
Model United Nations, also known as MUN, is an educational model of the United Nations used for simulations in which students learn about diplomacy and international relations. At an MUN conference, each student acts as a representative of a country, organization, or individual and must work with other delegates from around the world to solve a problem.
MUN teaches participants skills such as research, public speaking, debate, writing, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership. While MUN is typically used as an extracurricular activity, some schools also offer it as a course. MUN aims to engage students and help them develop a deeper understanding of current world issues and global politics.
Delegates conduct research before conferences: they must formulate position papers and develop policy proposals to discuss with other delegates in their committees. At the end of a conference, delegates will vote on written policies (called draft resolutions) and aim to pass them by majority vote. The best-performing delegates and delegations in each committee are occasionally awarded prizes.
ACADEMIC ASPECTS
The Model UN aims to develop negotiation, speaking, and communication skills. It takes a semi-academic approach to diplomacy and politics. In addition, crisis committees that address current or historical crisis scenarios can develop leadership skills and the ability to adapt to and cope with unexpected situations. When preparing for a conference, topics are selected for each committee. Typically, research and background guides are prepared by the conference organizers. Based on these guides, delegates from each committee are usually expected to research and formulate a position for the country or group they represent and present a position paper. The purpose of writing a position paper is to familiarize delegates with important topics of discussion, encourage academic research and writing, and ensure comprehensive preparation for conferences.
PROCEDURES
In order to maintain decorum, most Model UN committees use parliamentary procedures derived from Robert's Rules of Order. In addition, the United Nations has taken the lead in efforts to introduce new Model UN procedural rules that are more closely aligned with those used by the real UN. Since there is no governing body for Model UN, each conference varies in its procedural rules.
TOPICS AND PROPOSALS
Agenda items and motions determine how topics will be prioritized, how motions will be voted on, and how the overall flow of the discussion will be facilitated. “Agenda items” are used to discuss topics that are outside the scope of substantive discussions. They are more personal in nature and do not require a vote. Motions are used to discuss procedural matters and help advance the discussion on a committee topic. A delegate may request that the committee as a whole take a specific action. Most motions require a vote for approval. The motions used at any given time in a Model UN committee vary depending on where the committee is in the flow of the discussion.

DECISIONS
A resolution is a legal document that expresses the general opinion of the committee. Once adopted, it can be seen as a list of actions recommended by your committee.
Resolutions are a written compilation of ideas discussed during negotiations. They are accepted as the final results of speeches, writings, and negotiations. Resolutions must go through a draft, be approved by the podium, and then undergo discussion and amendments.
MUN Resolutions consist of both preamble and operative clauses. Preamble clauses help outline the general issues that a resolution will address, while operative clauses propose possible solutions and help present the solutions in an organized and easy-to-understand manner.
