Purpose and Content

The aim of the course This course aims to provide knowledge regarding Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) processes in medical imaging—specifically focusing on achieving optimum image quality in a cost-effective manner while minimizing patient radiation exposure—by covering the factors that define image quality, their proper management, and the fundamental QC and calibration methods that ensure the reliability of diagnostic information. Additionally, it aims to develop competencies in professional communication skills that maximize patient safety and well-being, as well as patient and physician satisfaction, all of which are integral parts of medical imaging processes.
Course Content Introduction to Quality in Medical Imaging: Basic concepts and standards regarding QA and QC, appropriateness criteria, and the duties and responsibilities of technicians in medical imaging quality processes; Importance of Communication in Medical Imaging: Communication with patients, communication with radiologists and other support staff, ensuring patient safety in radiology; Factors (criteria) defining image quality in radiography (edge sharpness, edge blur, density and brightness, contrast, spatial resolution, distortion), artifacts; Digital image quality criteria (Signal-to-Noise Ratio, Contrast-to-Noise Ratio, detector efficiency, etc.); Geometric factors affecting image quality (SID, SOD, focal spot size, etc.), scatter control and operating parameters (kVp, mAs), determination of appropriate dose, basic quality control and calibration tests for radiographic equipment, AI-supported devices, and the contribution of AI to quality processes in medical imaging.
